What we collect
Your farm, on your device
The game saves your farm on your device: your crops, money, friendships, progress and the names you give your farmer and farm. It also keeps your settings, such as graphics quality, controls, and whether you share usage data. Nothing here leaves your device unless you sign in, as described next.
Your account, if you sign in
Signing in is optional. You can create an account with an email address and password, or continue with Google or Apple. We use Firebase Authentication, a Google service, to run accounts.
- Email and password: we store your email address. Firebase stores your password in a protected form, and we never see it.
- Google or Apple: we receive the email address, name and profile picture that your provider shares. Apple lets you hide your real email address.
- Cloud save: a copy of your farm, including the names you typed, so you can play on other devices and recover your farm.
- Account ID: a random identifier for your account.
An anonymous ID for purchases and your trial
On iPhone, iPad and Android, the game creates an anonymous account ID even if you never sign in. It holds no name or email address. We use it to keep your free trial and anything you buy attached to your copy of the game.
Purchases
If you unlock the full farm or leave a tip, the App Store or Google Play handles the payment. They send us the transaction ID, the product, the price and currency, the purchase date, and whether the purchase was a test, was shared through Family Sharing, or was refunded. We link this to your account ID. We never receive your card or bank details.
Your free-trial length
We are testing how long the free trial should be, so different players may get a different number of free game days (7, 10, 15 or 30), chosen at random. We store the length your account was given, when it was given, and your platform, so it stays the same if you reinstall or sign in on another device.
How the game is played (usage data)
Unless you turn it off, the game sends us information about how it's played. We use Google Analytics for Firebase and PostHog for this.
- Game events: for example planting a crop, driving to market, selling crates, haggling, opening a screen, changing a setting, starting a purchase, or a sign-in succeeding or failing. Events include in-game details such as the day, your in-game cash and where you are in the game.
- Device information: platform, operating system and version, device model, app version, language, input type (touch, controller or remote), and approximate location (country, region or city) worked out from your IP address.
- Identifiers: random IDs that Firebase and PostHog create for your installation and, if you're signed in, your account ID.
We never send your email address, or the farmer and farm names you type, to analytics.
On Android, Google's Firebase Analytics software can read your device's advertising ID. We don't show ads and don't use it for advertising. You can reset or delete your advertising ID in your Android settings, under Privacy, then Ads. On iPhone and iPad, the game never asks for permission to track you, so it can't read your device's advertising identifier.
Security checks
To make sure requests to our servers come from a genuine copy of the game, we use Firebase App Check. It asks Google Play Integrity (on Android) or Apple's App Attest and DeviceCheck (on iPhone and iPad) to vouch for your device. We receive only the result of the check.
In-game messages
We may show announcements or invitations to answer a short survey inside the game, using Firebase In-App Messaging. These appear only when you share usage data, and only on phones and tablets. A survey will tell you how your answers are used before you answer.
Release news from this website
If you ask for an email on release day, we store your email address to send you news about the game's release. Every email has a link to unsubscribe.
When you contact us
If you email us, we keep your message and email address so we can reply.
How we use it
| Why | What we use | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Run the game and save your farm | Your farm, settings, account and cloud save | Providing the game you asked for |
| Give you what you bought, and restore it on other devices | Purchases, account ID, anonymous ID | Providing the game you asked for |
| Keep your free-trial length the same everywhere | Trial length, account ID, anonymous ID | Providing the game you asked for |
| Find out what's fun, what's confusing and what breaks, and test changes such as the trial length | Usage data, trial length | Our legitimate interest in improving the game. You can turn it off at any time. |
| Stop fraud and abuse | Security checks, purchases | Our legitimate interest in protecting the game and its players |
| Send release news | Your email address, if you sign up | Your consent, which you can withdraw by unsubscribing |
| Meet tax, accounting and other legal duties | Purchase records | Legal obligation |
We don't use your information to show you ads, and we don't make decisions about you by automated means that have legal or similarly significant effects.
Where it's stored
Accounts, cloud saves and purchase records are stored on Google Cloud. Our purchase-checking server runs in Johannesburg, South Africa, and some background jobs that recheck purchases with Google run in Belgium. PostHog stores usage data in the European Union.
Our providers may process information in other countries, including the United States. When information leaves South Africa or the European Economic Area, we rely on our providers' legal safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses.
How long we keep it
- Your farm on your device: until you start a new farm or delete the game.
- Your account and cloud save: for as long as you have an account. When you ask us to delete your account, we delete it and your cloud save within 30 days.
- Purchase records: for as long as you can use what you bought, and afterwards for as long as tax and accounting law requires.
- Usage data: up to 14 months, after which it is deleted or kept only as totals that don't identify anyone.
- Release news: until you unsubscribe, or until we stop sending release news.
Your choices and rights
- Play as a guest. You don't need an account to play.
- Stop sharing usage data. Turn off Settings → Account → Share usage data. The game stops sending usage data from that moment, on that device.
- Sign out under Settings → Account. The game switches to the guest farm kept on that device.
- Delete your account. Email us at hello@klooless.com from the email address on your account, and we'll delete your account and cloud save. We keep purchase records only as the law requires, without your email address. Purchases also stay in your App Store or Google Play history, which Apple and Google control.
- Delete your farm on a device by deleting the game.
You also have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to how we use it, and to withdraw your consent. Email us and we'll answer within 30 days. We may need to confirm it's really you first.
If you're in South Africa and unhappy with how we've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Regulator. If you're in the European Union or United Kingdom, you can complain to your local data protection authority. We'd appreciate the chance to fix things first.
Children
The game is suitable for all ages, but it isn't designed for young children and we don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without a parent's or guardian's permission. In South Africa, anyone under 18 needs a parent's or guardian's permission to create an account. We suggest younger children play as a guest, with Share usage data turned off. If you think a child has given us information without permission, email us and we'll delete it.
Security
Information travels between the game and our servers over encrypted connections. Each account can read only its own cloud save, and purchase records can be changed only by our server after checking them with Apple or Google. No system is perfectly secure, so if something goes wrong, we'll tell affected players and the authorities as the law requires.
Changes to this policy
We'll update this policy when the game changes how it uses information, including when the Mac, Windows and Apple TV versions launch. We'll change the date at the top, and for significant changes we'll also tell you in the game or on this website before they take effect.
